Fashion Friday #3: Layers for Spring

I don’t know what the weather has been like in your neck of the woods, but in my area it went from 70 degrees to 20 degrees in just about 24 hours earlier in the week.  Yep, I went from sandals to snow boots literally over night.  Needless to say, deciding what to wear in this up-and-down weather is almost as difficult as it has been digging out from all the snow that has fallen this past winter… almost as difficult!

Today’s inspiration outfit from the blog Southern Curls & Pearls (Love this blog by the way… Make sure to check it out!) caught my eye because while it’s pretty and colorful, it still utilizes layers to make the transition into spring a bit more bearable with these varied temps. I love how the pastel yellow sweater is vibrant yet still warm, and the combination of the polka dot button up with the striped purse is pattern mixing at its best.  (Same color scheme…)  Plus, the closed-toe heels paired with the cropped jeans make for a spring-like look while still keeping those legs and feet nice and warm.

Today’s outfit was created by ‘shopping’ for pieces from J. Crew and Kate Spade.

Spring Layers with Pattern Mixing

(Inspiration Photo Source)

Polka-dot Popover // Merino Tippi Sweater in Daffodil

Toothpick Jean in Classic Rinse // Kate Spade Nylon Stripe Ellen (Splurge item!)

This is an easy to put together outfit and you may even have the majority of the pieces in your closet.  If you don’t have the polka dot popover, don’t sweat it!  Play around with any patterned button up you may have and layer it under a solid lightweight sweater.  The purpose of these outfit breakdowns is to show how easy it is to take a look and simplify it by separating out the feature pieces.

PS – I personally think purses are worth the splurge if you are going to invest in fashion.  In my opinion, handbags, jackets, shoes and jeans are the best categories to spend that shopping money because those pieces get worn the most!

Conversation Time.

  • What are your thoughts on pattern mixing?  Would you pair a polkadot blouse with a striped handbag?
  • What fashion categories do you splurge: shoes? handbags? jackets? etc.?
  • Would you wear this look?

  1. LOVE this look! I’m all about bright colors this time of the year. And like you, we’ve gone from 70’s to 30’s in a matter of hours. I’m so ready for spring to be here to stay!

Ahh I agree! Every year the transition into spring is so tough, especially when you leave in the morning when it’s 30 degrees and when you come home and it’s 60! It can be really hard to dress for that kind of change.

I like this look a lot too! Transition to spring outfit for sure!

I bet we can find very similar outfits to this one in our own closets. We need to check out all of our button ups + sweaters and find a good combination!

Thanks girl! I love investing in bags since I use them everyday. Definitely worth the splurge! 🙂

  4. I LOVE pattern mixing! It’s a great way to mix things up and make your outfit fun and interesting!

I don’t mind splurging on purses, shoes, and jackets…but only if they are classic pieces. If I know they are most likely going to be out of style within a year or two, I don’t splurge on them.

I am the same way! Trend pieces I typically prefer to spend less on since I will only get a season or so out of it, but for the classics – especially jeans, button ups, sweaters, heels, boots, etc., I prefer to spend more so that the quality is better and it will last longer.

  5. Haha oh girl, same here! They’re calling for 70’s today and tomorrow and two inches of snow Sunday night. So. Over. It! And it’s been crazy windy down here, boo! LOVE this outfit, you are such a little fashionista 🙂 Have a GREAT weekend and spend lots of time with that sweet husband and pups of yours 🙂

We are supposed to get some sleet here today too! I am not looking forward to it at all. I hope you are having a wonderful birthday weekend! I took Tebow on a long run in the sun yesterday and he loved it! (and, so did I! 🙂 )

  6. Love pattern mixing! The seasons Re different living in El Paso though- very mild, but can get cold and windy. I’m too cheap to take the plunge in buying a good purse (I’m just not a purse girls!), but I have invested in some Limited jackets. Finding good jeans is hard, but I’m probably too impatient, haha.

I agree! Jackets are another great splurge item. I spent quite a bit on my winter coat that I purchased from Banana Republic, but I was able to get two long, cold winter seasons out of it so I think it was definitely worth the extra money. Good jeans really are hard to find! I have a pair of Joe’s Jeans that were really expensive, but they fit so well and are comfortable. In my opinion – those are keepers! 😉

  7. Adorable. I love mixing patterns!

I totally agree about splurging on purses. So funny, I was actually JUST thinking about this topic yesterday. Everything else in your wardrobe is unidentifiable (unless you’re dealing with a major fashionista) and you can find totally cute budget-friendly pieces that look like high end. But with bags, there’s really no substitute for a high quality handbag. And knockoffs are not only wrong, they’re also very obvious.

Btw, I need that Kate Spade crossbody!!!

Too funny! My closet is the same way. I spend more on purses and jeans, and sometimes a name brand will slip into my shoes and jackets department, but all of my tops and a lot of my scarves and accessories are less expensive. Investing in the staples is just a lot more important to me than all the little extras that I don’t wear as often. 🙂

  8. Thanks for sharing this outfit! I really love the pattern mixing here, and I think the yellow looks great with the patterns too. I don’t think a layered sweater goes out of style!
